Base jumper's brush with death

Dramatic rescue /Europics
A thrill-seeking base jumper had an amazing escape after he was left hanging hundreds of feet over a Swiss mountain when his parachute failed to open.
Extreme sports fan Anton Bader, 26, smashed into the side of the peak heading for certain death as his chute dangled helplessly behind him.
But by an astonishing stroke of luck the parachute was snagged on a rocky outcrop and left terrified Bader swinging over the sheer drop and certain death hundreds of feet below.
Climbing expert Patrick Torent, who took part in the rescue on La Cascade de Fionnay mountain, near Sitten, said: "He had unbelievable luck.
"He smashed against the side of the mountain but then just remained hanging instead of plunging to the ground.
"It was impossible to reach him with a helicopter because of the angle and it took five hours to bring him down to safety," he added.
Officials first had to dam up a waterfall so they could reach the stricken jumper by rope and harness nearly 1,000ft down from the peak.
"All the time his life was literally hanging in the balance. He had been warned not to move at all even to try and hold on to the rock because it could knock the parachute free," said rescue worker Torent.
